莫札特第21號鋼琴協奏曲和馬勒第五號交響曲均以進行曲風起始、輪旋終曲收尾，並各自包含一個絕美的慢速樂章：第21號協奏曲的行板第二樂章，以及第五號交響曲的稍慢板第四樂章。
因為深受世人喜愛，這兩個相隔一個多世紀的慢速樂章，均常脫離所屬作品，單獨在音樂會上演出。然而，莫札特的行板樂章惟有做為第21號鋼琴協奏曲的中間樂章，方能在柔美旋律之外，顯現其形式的秀雅與風格的完熟。馬勒獻給妻子的稍慢板樂章，更是第五號交響曲恢弘巨構當中的一個重要橋梁：第一樂章沉重的葬禮進行曲在狂暴洶湧的第二樂章爆發開來；對比豐富、形式複雜的「詼諧曲」第三樂章自成一格，構成交響曲的核心；配器精煉、綿長柔美的第四樂章因而成為一個內斂又澎湃的預備，準備往向歡欣喧鬧的勝利終曲。
Mozart's Piano Concerto no. 21 and Mahler's Symphony no. 5 both begin with a march figure and end with a rondo-finale. Both compositions include a beautiful slow movement: the second movement "Andante in F major" in Piano Concerto no. 21 and the fourth movement "Adagietto" in Symphony no. 5.
Because of their popularity, these two slow movements, which were written more than a century apart, are often performed on their own, independent from their respective complete works. Nevertheless, the complete Piano Concerto no. 21 with "Andante in F major" as the middle movement is the best way for the audience to fully appreciate the elegance and maturity of this particular piece. Mahler's fourth movement "Adagietto" serves as an important bridge in Symphony no. 5: the heavy Death March in the first movement finally explodes in the violent second movement; the third movement, a Scherzo which displays an array of contrasts and intricate styles, is the core of this symphony. Then the fourth movement comes, with its simple arrangements and lingering elegance, forms a reserved preparation ready to pounce into the following loud and cheerful Rondo-Finale.
